Where ICR Landscaping Services works
We are based in Newcastle upon Tyne and work across the city and the surrounding Tyneside area — roughly a 25-mile radius. The notes below are not filler: the housing stock, access and ground conditions genuinely differ from one part of Tyneside to the next, and they change how a driveway, patio or fence has to be built.
Central & East Newcastle
Largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces and Tyneside flats, with small rear yards rather than gardens and back lanes instead of driveways. Access is the defining issue here — in most streets there is no vehicle route to the rear, so stone in and spoil out is barrowed through the property or down the lane, which we allow for when we price. Yards suit small paved areas, raised planters and screening rather than lawns, and boundary walls are as often brick as timber. Parts of Jesmond sit within conservation areas, which can affect what you are permitted to do at the front.

North Newcastle
A mix of interwar semis with long, generous rear gardens around Gosforth and Kenton, and later estate housing at Kingston Park, Killingworth and Longbenton. The older properties usually have front gardens deep enough to convert to off-street parking, which is where most of our driveway work in this part of the city comes from. On the newer estates the common problem is the opposite: a thin skim of topsoil laid over compacted subsoil at build stage, so lawns thin out and puddle. Turf there needs the ground breaking up and topsoil adding before anything is laid. Further out at Wideopen and Dinnington the plots get bigger and back onto green belt, which brings longer boundary runs and more fencing.

West Newcastle
This side of the city sits on higher ground running down towards the Tyne at Newburn and Lemington, and much of it is built over former colliery and industrial land. That matters when you are digging: made ground can be inconsistent in depth and strength, so a driveway excavation sometimes needs going deeper than planned, and a geotextile membrane under the sub-base earns its keep. Housing is mostly interwar and post-war semis with square rear gardens and side access, which makes the work easier than in the terraces — a barrow or a mini digger can usually get round the back.

North Tyneside & the Coast
Coastal exposure changes what lasts. At Tynemouth and Whitley Bay a fence takes far more wind loading than the same fence three miles inland, so post spacing, post depth and concreting matter more, and salt-laden air is hard on cheap ironmongery — hinges and latches are worth spending on. Ground gets sandier towards the coast, which drains well but gives less lateral support to posts. Much of Wallsend and North Shields is denser terraced and semi-detached housing where yard and small-garden paving is more common than a full driveway.

Gateshead & South of the Tyne
The land drops steeply towards the river on this side, and gardens follow it. Around Low Fell, Whickham and Dunston it is common to find a rear garden that falls a metre or more from the house to the boundary, which is why so much of our work here involves terracing, sleeper and block retaining walls and stepped patios rather than a single flat area. Sloping plots also mean fencing has to be raked or stepped to follow the ground, and drainage has to be planned properly so a new patio does not simply push water down onto a neighbour.

Northumberland Border
Out past the city boundary the plots get considerably larger. Ponteland and the Darras Hall estate in particular are known for long frontages and deep gardens, which brings a different kind of job: sweeping driveways where resin bound and gravel come into their own over long runs, in-and-out drives, and boundary fencing measured in tens of metres rather than a couple of panels. Cramlington is largely later estate housing with more uniform, compact plots, where the usual work is a front driveway conversion, a rear patio and a full fence replacement.
